Beauty of the Month

Tara Reid!

Our Beauty of the month earns her crown by having the most monthly class attendances.   Tara has been a member since 12/29/11, and her favorite class is Lorie’s Pads and Gloves, Monday nights at 5:30.  She is from North Attleboro,and is our youngest Beauty of the Month so far!

Wonder Woman Wednesday

Striking Beauties loves to support and promote local women in their business endeavors. To do this, we have created Wonder Woman Wednesdays! On a selected Wednesday of each month, we will feature a local artisan or business owner and give them the opportunity to display, demonstrate and sell their products during our operating hours.  In This Corner…A Trainer Spotlight:
Lorie George

Lorie teaches our Pads and Gloves class, Kickboxing class, and Little Strikers classes.  Lorie is a black belt in Kenpo Karate and has been teaching it since 1985.  She is certified in Early Child Education, and in her twenty-six years of teaching, she also became certified as a Kickboxing Instructor,  Cardio-Karate Instructor, and Self Defense Instructor.
Lorie also leads seminars and private classes in self-defense for all ages.
So what advice does Lorie have for encouraging your child to become more active? “Try to get them into something that sparks their interest, any activity is better than no activity!  If one doesn’t work, keep trying.  Try and stick to the commitment, but let your child know that they can choose another activity if they are not enjoying themselves.”  Lorie suggests that a six week introductory course is a good length of time to give a new activity a trial run.   “I encourage kids to complete the session to teach them not to quit, and to respect their instructor and commitment they made.”
Lorie is a huge believer of teaching kids respect for themselves and others. “Individual sports in a group atmosphere-like boxing and kickboxing-accomplish that.  Little Strikers classes enable them to not only work on themselves, but with other people and peers in a controlled environment. Ultimately they gain self confidence, self respect, and respect for others.”

Nutrition and Diet

It is important to fuel up before any workout!  Make sure you eat a light meal that includes carbs.  Whole grains are best-like oatmeal- and fresh fruit, or a non-fat Greek yogurt with a few almonds or walnuts which have excellent healthy fat.   After a workout, help your muscles build and repair by adding protien.  A good example of a post-workout snack is an apple with natural peanut butter, scrambled egg whites with a piece of whole grain toast, or a nutritious shake such as Juice Plus!  Most importantly–keep hydrated before, during and after your workout!

Fitness Advice

Can’t make it to the gym?  Research shows that even 10-minute increments of exercise is beneficial!
There are many exercises that can be done even while watching TV-no equipment needed:
Alternate squats and lunges with push-ups, in sets of 10-12.  Don’t forget crunches, planks and bicycle kicks to work your abdominals. Cardio? Use your staircase! Get a full body workout and stay warmed up for your next Striking Beauties class!

 

Workout Tips

*If you are stiff and sore from a work out, do some stretching, stay hydrated, and stay active. You will help your body recover if you keep moving, so come back for another class!
*If you are new to any sport, working with a Certified Personal Trainer is a good idea. Learning and focusing on form and technique is very important, and will prevent injuries no matter which activity you choose. Speed and power will come later.

Health Tips

*Bacteria breeds in dark, moist places.  After a workout, stuff your sweaty shoes and gloves with newspaper to absorb moisture and prevent smelly bacterial growth!
*It’s always a good idea to wipe down machines and other equipment before AND after you use them.  Please remember to be courteous to your “gym sisters” especially during cold and flu season and use the wipes and spray provided! Thank you!

Snow and the Rhode Show!

Yeah!!! The snow finally came!! Well, you may not agree, but we LOVE it! (Ok, it might just be me who loves it :) ) But it does make outdoor running a bit more difficult, so it’s time to bring it inside onto the treadmills as we get ready for upcoming fights and the Warrior Dash competition!

The Warrior Dash may not be until June but have you taken a look at that the website?  Those people are crazy!!!  I guess that means we are too!!  Better start training today!!     Join us for Coach Jess’s MONDAY 9:30am Derby Girl class as well as her WEDNESDAY 5:30pm Core Conditioning. Just 2 of our many classes at SB designed to whip us into shape!!

Today we were LIVE on The Rhode Show!  Mary is an awesome host, so much fun to work with and just puts you at ease.  If you didn’t get a chance to see us, check out the WPRI website and pick up some fitness tips and exercises.

Tracey, our lovely personal trainer, did a 2 minute routine- 4 exercises – high knees/squat jumps/push ups/bicycle crunches – back to back,  30 seconds each. No rest. At the end of the 2 minutes, you can take a rest for 1 minute. The intensity, speed and power from this format mimics the conditions and demands of an amateur boxing round. Boxing requires us to train sport specific and this is a great example.  But you can create your own workout- just choose an exercise to do intensely, non-stop for 2 minutes. Rest 1 minute and repeat! Jumping rope is great, shadow boxing too! Whatever you choose,  give 100% for the 2 minutes, rest a minute then do it again!! 5 times! Well, what are you waiting for – get up! :)

2012…A NEW YOU in a NEW YEAR!

As 2011 comes to an end, it’s time to reflect upon all that has happened during the past 12 months. Each one of us has spent the entire year living and learning. Every day our lives were touched by something or someone. We experienced happy times, sad times, crazy times, fun times, loving times, difficult times, stressful times, rewarding times, emotional times, blessed times. And we grew from every encounter; from every experience we absorbed lessons, consciously or unconsciously.

As 2011 comes to an end, we reflect back on those experiences and ponder the lessons learned. From those lessons, we make New Year’s resolutions. Promises to ourselves that we will never repeat those experiences or promises to ourselves that we shall relive them, again and again, throughout the year quickly approaching.

As 2011 comes to an end, we at STRIKING BEAUTIES wish you a new year filled with positive lessons, healthy habits, wise choices, adherence to your goals, fulfillment of your dreams and success in all you strive to attain.
